James Wiseman almost made a return to the team this season, but swelling in his knee forced the Golden State Warriors to shut him down permanently. The training staff decided to hold him out because they are looking out for his long-term health.
That makes some wonder what is Wiseman doing now. After practice on Wednesday, Steve Kerr revealed the answer.
“He's out on the floor when we're talking about concepts,” Kerr told ClutchPoints. “He's absorbing everything and he will travel with us on the road during the playoffs and every bit of experience is important, even if he's not playing.”
The 7-footer played in two G League games before he found out his season would be ending. In those appearances, the Warriors youngster averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.
After his first game, Wiseman talked about how happy he was to be playing again and how good he felt physically. Everything looked good. He was moving well on the court and making athletic plays, and then boom. Just like that, it was over.
The Warriors had big plans for James Wiseman in his second year. In the beginning, they believed he would be with the team during training camp, but that ended up being far from true. Now, the plan is for him to return next season.
That preparation begins now. His involvement in practice and being active with the team during what they hope to be a long playoff run will be vital. It will make him hungrier than ever and he will be learning simultaneously. A healthy smarter Wiseman will make a huge difference to the Warriors roster next season.
