Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith was forced to miss the second half of Sunday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers after suffering a calf injury. The good news for Washington is that the injury does not seem to be serious, and it appears to be nothing more than a strain.

This report comes via NFL insider Chris Mortensen:

Ian Rapoport delivered similar news and even said Alex Smith hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

As it turns out, Smith sitting out the second half was more of a precautionary move by head coach Ron Rivera. Smith is no spring chicken, so it wasn't surprising that Washington erred on the side of caution with his calf injury.

Washington logged a 23-15 win over the 49ers, with Smith completing 8-of-19 passes for 57 yards and one interception. It wasn't exactly a tremendous performance from the veteran QB, and his early exit provided former starter Dwayne Haskins with one full half of action.

For his part, Haskins completed seven out of 12 passes for 51 yards. Haskins helped Washington secure the victory against San Francisco, but at this point, it does not appear as though he is close to reclaiming the starting gig from Smith. In the case, however, that Smith is forced to sit out Washington's Week 15 matchup against the Seahawks, then Haskins could be in line for a spot start.

Sunday's win was Washington's fourth straight victory to improve to 6-7 on the season. They now have a firm grasp on the top spot in the NFC East.
