After being considered as doubtful for their Week 14 game against the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Football Team running back Antonio Gibson has been ruled out for the game due to a turf toe, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Gibson missed consecutive days of practice this week because of the injury, which made the possibility of playing against the 49ers unlikely. The 22-year-old suffered the toe injury in the first quarter of Washington's Week 13 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which limited him to just two carries and 14 rushing yards as he missed the rest of the game.

Washington, however, rallied in his absence, eventually pulling off a stunning 23-17 victory to hand the Steelers their first loss of the season in the biggest upset of the season while also picking up their third straight win.

Despite winning without him, Gibson, a third-round pick by Washington out of Memphis in the 2020 NFL Draft, remains an important part of the team’s offense. Through 12 games, the running back has 141 carries and 655 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns, ranking 17th overall in the NFL in total rushing yards. His best game so far came in Washington’s 41-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12 on Thanksgiving, when he finished with 20 carries for 115 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Without their running back, the Washington Football Team will look to build on their improbable win over Pittsburgh when they take on San Francisco. The Week 14 game will have big implications for Washington’s playoff hopes, as they remain tied with the New York Giants at 5-7 on top of the NFC East, and a win over the 49ers would help them keep in step with the Giants with three games remaining on their schedule.
