History was made Wednesday at the Westminster Dog Show. Normally held at Madison Square Garden, the show was moved to the suburban Lyndhurst estate in 2021 and this year due to the pandemic. However, the event didn’t disappoint. Trumpet the bloodhound emerged victorious in a field of more than 3,000 dogs, becoming the first of his breed to, er, fetch the trophy at the 146th annual Westminster Dog Show, per the Associated Press.

A bloodhound named Trumpet won the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Wednesday night, marking the first time the breed has ever snared U.S. dogdom’s most coveted best in show prize.

That’s right, Trumpet the bloodhound made history at the Westminster Dog Show. The 4 1/2-year-old bloodhound edged out a French bulldog, a German Shepherd, a Maltese, an English setter, a Samoyed, and a Lakeland terrier to win best in show.

Handler, co-breeder, and co-owner Heather Helmer, who goes by the name of Heather Buehner as well, had this to say after Trumpet’s triumphant victory.

“I was shocked,” said handler, co-breeder and co-owner Heather Helmer, who also goes by Heather Buehner. The competition was stiff, “and sometimes I feel the bloodhound is a bit of an underdog.”

Trumpet may have been an underdog, but he had a champion’s mentality, even enjoying his fame in the aftermath while posing for pictures.

Of course, his patience was short-lived, as he eventually began to sniff some flowers that were placed for decoration. He is a bloodhound after all!

Besides, we think Trumpet was entitled to that after making history at the Westminster Dog Show.
