The Chicago White Sox were handed a couple of unfortunate blows at the beginning of the season, with Lance Lynn being ruled out until June and Lucas Giolito heading to the 10-day IL. With their rotation looking depleted at the moment, they were interested in trading for Oakland Athletics ace Frankie Montas, who is essentially the only starter from last year left on their roster.

However, according to Jon Heyman, the White Sox have moved on from the idea of making a move for the hard-throwing righty and apparently, it was really never much of a reality.

Reports of the White Sox’s involvement were exaggerated. The South Siders made an attempt to land Indiana product Sean Manaea, but sources say of any talk regarding Montas: “That ship has sailed.” Realistically, the A’s would require a haul for Montas, who isn’t a free agent until after next season (a year longer than Manaea) and is seen as a potential superstar by some. One source said since the Chisox didn’t have enough to trade for Manaea, it may be unlikely that they could land Montas.

So Chicago was eyeing Manaea as well, but he ended up with the San Diego Padres instead. Heyman claims the White Sox wouldn't have enough of a haul to attract Oakland, whether it was for Manaea before he was traded or Montas right now, who is one of the most promising young stars in the game.

For now, though, the South Siders are doing just fine. They're 4-1 to start 2022 and the likes of Michael Kopech, Vince Velasquez, and Dylan Cease have stepped up and put together a few quality outings.
