This is an exciting offseason in the NFL for one reason in particular. Tom Brady will become a free agent for the first time in his career. There have been a few teams linked to Brady, but one has come up more than others — the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chargers are coming off a disappointing 5-11 campaign in 2019.They have, reportedly, decided to move on from their long-time franchise quarterback Philip Rivers. Signing Brady seems like a lateral move since they will be going from one aging quarterback to another, but the idea has been thrown out there.

For Tom Brady, this would not be the best move. The New England Patriots won the AFC East for the 10th straight season in 2019. They finished as the No. 3 seed in the AFC after blowing a chance to clinch a bye in Week 17. The Patriots failed to reach the AFC Championship Game for the first time since 2010. Brady has decided to test the waters in free agency but it makes sense for him to return to New England rather than taking a chance out west.

Why Tom Brady should stay in NE?

Brady has spent his entire career in New England. In 2019, they did not have the offensive weapons to win, which reared its head in the playoffs against the Tennessee Titans. On the defensive side, New England is ready.

The finished first in total defense in 2019, led by the Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore. They are coached by one of the best of all-time in Bill Belichick and have developed a winning culture. Staying in New England would basically guarantee Brady a playoff spot. That is something he will not get in Los Angeles.

Let's not forget maybe the most important thing. The Patriots play in the AFC East. It has been a poor division for years but seems to be improving. The Buffalo Bills will be a threat next season and people are holding out hope that the New York Jets can look like a professional team. Regardless, the Patriots own that division and everybody associated with the AFC East knows it.

The AFC West is full of talent. The Kansas City Chiefs just won the Super Bowl and have the best quarterback in the league in Patrick Mahomes. They are not going anywhere for a long time. The Denver Broncos defense is stacked and the Oakland Raiders are on the rise. Tom Brady could go to a Charger team that might finish in last place once again in 2020.

The Patriots and Tom Brady need to work out a deal with keeps him in New England until he decides to retire. This would likely guarantee him and the team another division title and a chance to play for another Super Bowl.
