Simona Halep's incredible run at Wimbledon continues. Halep took down American Amanda Anisimova on Wednesday, advancing to the semifinals after her straight sets victory. The Romanian tennis star somehow has yet to drop a set at the 2022 tourney, as she is a force to be reckoned with at the moment.
After the match, Halep was asked, “is this the best tennis you've played since winning Wimbledon?” This was a reference to her 2019 victory at the All-England Club, her last major win. Halep's response was a strong one, per The Tennis Podcast.
Halep said “yes, definitely.” She believes this is the best tennis she's played since her last major- and the numbers would certainly support that sentiment.
The 30-year-old cited her struggles from last year's injury-riddled campaign, which saw her deal with shoulder, calf, knee and groin injuries. Halep was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon, which denied her a chance at defending her 2019 title.
She then fell out of the top-10, ending a 373-week reign among the top-10 women's tennis players. However, Halep is back now- and she says she is trying to “build her confidence back” and “believe.”
It certainly seems to be working, as the former world no. 1 has been on cruise control at Wimbledon. There's a saying in tennis that you're only as good as your second serve. That means that Halep is playing at a very high level right now. Just look at what she was able to do against Anisimova.
That's very impressive. If Halep continues that level of serving, she'll very likely defeat Elena Rybakina to advance to the Wimbledon final.
