The Yankees are in the midst of a 10 game win streak. After a rather underwhelming offseason and slow start to the regular season, there were plenty of questions surrounding the team. But New York has found their stride and are playing some truly impressive baseball.

The winning streak began with a sweep over the Cleveland Guardians at home. The Yankees players performed well in the series, but there was plenty of controversy surrounding the fans. Nonetheless, New York got the job done. Since that emotional series, they have gone on to sweep the Orioles and Royals. Yes, maybe that is not the most difficult competition. But the Yankees are now facing a talented opponent in the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York kicked off the series with a big 3-2 win in Toronto. Gleyber Torres had a huge game with a two-run home run and a late ninth inning go-ahead RBI base hit to push New York in front. The victory brought the Yankees' win streak to 10 games.

So what does this win streak mean? What have we learned from the Yankees recent brand of quality play?

The Yankees 10 Game Win Streak Means…

Yankees Actually Have Starting Pitching

Starting Pitching was considered to be weakest link of the 2022 Yankees entering the season. They hadn't made any massive upgrades and the only notable name in the rotation was Gerrit Cole, who endured his share of struggles following the “sticky stuff” ban in 2021. Luis Severino had developed a bit of a reputation but injury concerns have told the story of his career over the past couple of years.

But as of May 3, the Yankees have the second lowest team ERA behind only the Dodgers.

Even more surprising than the Yankees unprecedented pitching ability is who has led the rotation. It hasn't been Gerrit Cole or Luis Severino. Rather, it has been Nestor Cortes. Cortes leads the Yankees with a 1.31 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts. His ability to keep hitters off-balance is unparalleled across the league due to his wacky, yet effective, pitching mechanics.

Cole and Severino have been solid as well though. Cole is second in strikeouts with 27 and owns a 3.00 ERA. Severino's 3.75 ERA is not bad and he has struck out 23 batters. Jordan Montgomery and Jameson Tailon have also impressed in the rotation.

Rare Offensive Balance

The Yankees have become known as a boom-or-bust team over the years. They tend to feature hitters with loads of power who strikeout all too much. However, New York possesses balance this season. And that balance has been a major reason for their winning ways.

Does the team still feature boom-or-bust guys? Yes. Joey Gallo certainly fits that category. But he has been mainly bust as evidenced by his team-leading strikeout numbers and only 2 homers on the season.

But the Yankees have three qualified batters who have posted batting averages of .296 or better. DJ LeMahieu is hitting .296, Aaron Judge is batting .298, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa is hitting .300 on the nose. Many Yankees' fans scoffed at the team when they passed up All-Star shortstop options over the offseason in Carlos Correa and Trevor Story. But Kiner-Falefa has produced positive numbers for New York.

And speaking of players who seemed underwhelming over the offseason, the Yankees decision to re-sign Anthony Rizzo has worked out tremendously. Sure, Matt Olson and Freddie Freeman have been good for the teams they ended up with. But Rizzo has looked like a superstar to open the 2022 season.

He leads the Yankees with 9 home runs to go along with a .256/.378/.634 line and a 1.012 OPS. Aaron Judge is right behind Rizzo with 8 bombs on the year.

Final Thoughts

This is a different Yankees team than year's past. They aren't just relying on home runs. They can pitch, hit, and manufacture runs. The Yankees will aim to extend their 10 game win streak in Toronto on Tuesday.
