With New York Yankees players dropping like flies, particularly relief pitchers, the Yankees were in dire need of a positive injury update. Aaron Boone supplied on Thursday, regarding veteran reliever Zack Britton, who has been shelved since September after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Boone revealed that Britton has advanced to the point where he'll begin throwing bullpen sessions on Tuesday, a major step in his road to recovery.

This news could not have come at a better time for Yankees fans, who just recently lost the likes of Chad Green, Luis Gil, Jonathan Loaisiga and Aroldis Chapman to the IL, as well as Giancarlo Stanton.

While it will likely still be some time before Britton is able to return to MLB action, the positive update should encourage Yankees fans about his availability later down the line.

Last year, Britton made 22 relief appearances for the Yankees. He had his worst season to date, registering a 5.89 ERA with just 16 strikeouts across 18.1 innings of work. The 34-year-old has only thrown a total of 37.1 innings over the past two seasons, so hopefully, he'll be able to stay healthy in his return to the mound, whenever that may be.

Throughout his esteemed MLB career, Britton has registered 439 relief appearances, logging a 3.12 ERA with 154 saves. At the height of his career with the Orioles, Britton was arguably the best reliever in baseball. While he's a few years removed from that level of play, he can still make a big impact in the back end of New York's bullpen.

Yankee fans will hope the rest of his recovery goes smoothly and he can make a return to the mound before long.
