The New York Yankees got their first baseman as the team re-signed former all-star Anthony Rizzo on Tuesday evening, per Bob. Nightengale. The deal is listed at two years and will be between $30-$35 million dollars according to Nightengale on Twitter. The Yankees have been in the market for a left-handed bat to balance out their heavy right-handed lineup and Rizzo certainly helps to accomplish that goal.

This may not be the news that Yankees fans wanted to hear, since many of them have been scrolling Twitter searching for Freddie Freeman news, but people forget that Rizzo is a very talented player. The veteran first baseman was acquired by New York at the trade deadline last July, and finished the 2021 campaign with a slash line of .248/.344/.440 to go along with 22 home runs and 61 RBI's. In 49 games for the Yankees, Rizzo clubbed 8 homers and hit .249.

Rizzo is a World Series champion, three-time all-star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and and one-time Silver Slugger award winner. This move does not necessarily remove New York from the Freddie Freeman sweepstakes, since the Yankees still have the DH option. The DH role is expected to be available especially considering that Aaron Boone has expressed a willingness to play Giancarlo Stanton in the outfield. However, the likelihood of New York signing Freeman certainly declines based on this transaction. They also inevitably will be trading first baseman Luke Voit in the near future as well based on this signing.

Rizzo will look to have a successful first full season in the Bronx.
