Why The Yankees Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Yankees have been one of the best teams in the MLB and they have a 51-28 record. They have struggled recently, losing four out of their last five games, but they are still one of the best teams in the MLB. Their bats have been great and their pitching is the best in the league. Juan Soto is a huge difference maker and an MVP-caliber player who was added to go with Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, and Anthony Volpe behind the plate. Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, and Carlos Rodon have all been at varying levels of at least good to great on the mound.
The Yankees are starting Luis Gil on the mound where he has a 9-2 record, a 2.77 ERA, and a 1.08 WHIP. Gil has allowed 26 runs on 47 hits with 41 walks and 97 strikeouts through 81.1 innings. He has started in 15 games and the Yankees have gone 12-3 in those games. Gil had a terrible game in his last time out but is primed for a bounce-back and has still been the best pitcher for the Yankees. The Mets have been playing much better behind the plate recently, so this could be an interesting matchup.
The biggest key for the Yankees is their offense. They are ranked ninth in the MLB currently in team batting average at .250 which is a massive improvement after struggling to .227 last season. Juan Soto has been a huge key player, leading in almost every batting category next to Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe. Soto leads the way in batting average at .305 and OBP at .431. Judge then leads in home runs at 28 and in RBI at 70. This offense has an interesting matchup against Sean Manaea for the New York Mets because he has been a bright spot for the Mets on the mound.
Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Mets had a complete makeover from last year to this year. They are 37-39 this season and have been inconsistent over their last five games after winning seven straight beforehand. Their bats have jumped above average after struggling earlier this season, while their pitching has still struggled. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Brandon Nimmo have been solid behind the plate despite their struggles on offense. Luis Severino, Tylor Megill, and Jose Butto have been solid despite the staff struggling. The Mets have struggled this season, but they are playing better recently leading into this matchup.
The Mets are starting Sean Manaea on the mound and he has a 4-3 record, a 4.16 ERA, and a 1.16 WHIP. Manaea has allowed 36 runs on 63 hits with 29 walks and 73 strikeouts through 71.1 innings. In the 14 games that he has started, the Mets are 8-6. This is a difficult matchup for him because the Yankees offense has been great this season. Manaea has been a key piece for the Mets on the mound, so this should be an interesting matchup for him against the Yankees behind the plate.
The Mets have not been great behind the plate overall, but have jumped into being an above-average offense. They have a .248 batting average after having a .238 batting average last season. Starling Marte, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor led the way in most batting categories this season. Nimmo leads in RBI at 43 and in OBP at .358. Then, Marte leads in batting average at .278, Alonso leads in home runs at 16, and Lindor in total hits at 74. They get a difficult matchup against Gil for the Rangers because he has been great on the mound even after the performance he had last time out. After all, this is a good rebound spot for him.
Final Yankees-Mets Prediction & Pick
The Yankees are the better team in this game, but the Mets' recent play can not be discounted. Gil is the better pitcher compared to Manaea. The Yankees are also the better offense behind the plate. The Mets are playing better overall, while the Yankees have dipped, so they should keep things close and cover. The Yankees might still win, but it is going to be close.
