Since the Dallas Mavericks selected former N.C State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. with the ninth overall pick in this year's draft, there has been nothing but praise thrown toward him from the organization.

This high level of excitement was recently voiced again through from second-year guard Yogi Ferrell about playing alongside this upcoming season, according to Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com.

“I mean, sometimes I don’t have to do everything, so I definitely like that,” Ferrell said of playing alongside Smith during summer-league play. “I can play off the ball a little bit, and I can knock down open shots. You know, I don’t have to go out and kill myself every single play by bringing the ball up when they’re pressuring me, so it’s been good playing with Dennis.”

Smith Jr. had a strong showing in the Las Vegas Summer League last month where he averaged 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game while helping lead the Mavericks to a 5-1 record. He displayed the ability to create his own shot while being a factor on both ends of the floor.

Meanwhile, Ferrell was a pleasant surprise for the Mavericks after latching on a 10-day contract in late January following being waived by the Brooklyn Nets. His play helped him earn a selection to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and a two-year deal with the team.

Although they do share the position on the floor, it could become an effective pairing in lineups used throughout the game this upcoming season.
