In the 2020 season, the Indianapolis Colts barely missed out on advancing deep in the playoffs after bowing to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round by way of a 27-24 defeat. With Philip River's one-and-done campaign coming to a close, the Colts then sought the services of Carson Wentz to begin a new era in Indianapolis.

In a bid to retool their roster, the front office did a little bit of everything in the 2021 NFL Draft as they nabbed players who can fill their needs on both ends on the field. The Colts also signed a total of five undrafted free agents who can compete for a roster spot in training camp.

USC wide receiver Tyler Vaughns is one of the top names who are expected to have a good chance of making the cut. He previously starred for the Trojans from 2017 to 2020 where he became the program's third all-time leading receiver with a total of 222 career catches.

Vaughns broke out in 2019 where he racked up a total of 912 receiving yards on 74 receptions and six touchdowns, only trailing behind his former teammate in Michael Pittman Jr. whom he will be reuniting within the Colts' receiving group.

In his senior year, Vaughns racked up a total of 406 receiving yards on 33 receptions and three touchdowns through six appearances. Even though his production decreased, it was still enough for him to be included in the second-team All-Pac 12 in 2020.

However, Vaughns recently had a dismal showing in USC's Pro Day where he only tallied a 4.62 40-yard dash as a 6'2, 190-pound prospect. Recording a faster time could've helped his cause to show the level of athleticism that he has, especially as a receiver. Despite his struggles, his previous showing in 2019 still gave the Colts a predictive look at the potential that he can possibly reach at the next level.

Out of everything, Vaughns' best assets are his hands and route running on the field. These attributes helped him not to have that many drops and easily evade opposing defenders all throughout his career with the Trojans. Though he can do a handful of things on the field, the question is if he can manage to improve on these and be effective when he makes the jump to the pros.

As of the moment, The Colts currently have Pittman Jr., TY Hilton, and Parris Campbell headlining the team's receiving corps. The Colts also have J.J. Nelson, Zach Pascal, and Ashton Dulin who are all looking to have increased roles with the team. Adding an extra body like Vaughns will help elevate the competition, especially for those players who are also looking to fill up the team's depth chart as the 2021 season progresses.

Given that the Colts have a new quarterback in Wentz, it would be wise for the team to fill up the field with as many targets as possible in order to give him a greater chance of succeeding next season. Not to mention that having a deep rotation of weapons was something that he missed during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, especially last season which led him to underperform on the field.

Though Vaughns still have plenty of room for improvement, his existing chemistry with Pittman Jr. will definitely help his cause as a familiar face around may just help him adjust better at the next level. The Colts are hoping that they can develop Tyler Vaughns in order for him to reach his potential and serve as a diamond in the rough for their offense next season.
