The small London Derby between Chelsea and Tottenham will be on this Sunday. Both teams are in a tight fight for Champions League positions. They also have their share of issues this year. Spurs won their first three games this season, but have been up and down since. That resulted in a sixth spot on the table, though they are four games behind West Ham United in fourth and Manchester United in third. Chelsea were supposed to be a prime title favorite, but have seriously slumped in the last few weeks. As they are set to meet on Sunday, here are two bold predictions for Chelsea vs. Tottenham.

Chelsea vs Spurs predictions

2. Spurs will win

Tottenham have been in some poor moments this season. However, since Antonio Conte took over from Nuno Espirito Santo, Spurs have become better. Their roster has been ravaged by COVID-19, which has also been the case for some of their opponents. Thus, while most teams have around 22 games, they are only on 19. As they are set to face Chelsea this weekend, they will be looking to continue their undefeated streak in the EPL.

Spurs have played nine games since their defeat at home to Manchester United. All nine were under new coach Conte and six were wins, with three draws. Also, they have momentum from the incredible comeback against Leicester City on Wednesday. Spurs were on the jaws of defeat for the first time in almost three months, but two goals by Steven Bergwijn in the 95th and 97th minute meant that Tottenham got a huge three points. Considering their form, the Spurs should hope for a positive result. Considering Chelsea's form, they should be hoping for an easy win.

Chelsea had a great start to the season, but their recent run has been abysmal. Since the 16th of December, Chelsea have played seven EPL games and won only one — against Aston Villa. On the bright side, they did only lose one of these games, by a single goal against champions Manchester City. On the negative side, they spilled points against the likes of Brighton twice, Wolverhampton, and the sliding Everton. Now, they are 12 points behind the leaders, Manchester City, with a game in hand. If they lose this game, Spurs will actually close the gap at just five points, with four games in hand.

Clearly, this game means a ton for both teams, but with Chelsea's recent form, it is tough to go against the Spurs here. Thus, while the score will most likely be close, Spurs will win by one or two goals.

1. Chelsea will continue with their goalscoring issues

In a general sense, Chelsea do not have lots of issues with goals. They scored 13 goals in the Champions League, adding 46 in the EPL. However, the problem is that they do not have an elite goalscorer. Unfortunately for Chelsea, the massive amount of money spent on Romelu Lukaku has not been returning a good value. The Belgian striker has scored five goals in the EPL this season, which is truly not enough after 23 games. He cost the Blues $132 million, which is an incredible figure for his contribution to the team.

The saviors of the Chelsea goalscoring season have been Jorginho, who has six goals, and Mason Mount with seven. The problem with them as primary goalscorers for the London club is that Jorginho really depends on penalties, while Mount is really not a poacher or a striker. Their contributions will fall off as the season goes, so Chelsea really need a reliable striker. They do have two strikers on their squad but both are having the worst periods of their careers. One of them is Lukaku, while the other is Timo Werner.

The German striker has been a wonder for RB Leipzig a couple of seasons back, but he scored only seven league goals for Chelsea since joining in 2020. Only one of those seven came this season, meaning that the likes of Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and even center-backs Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger have more goals than him. Chelsea will need a reliable goalscorer who can get 20+ goals this season, and it does not seem like Werner and Lukaku are the choice.

It will just continue against Spurs, who have been solid defensively this season. Tottenham have only conceded 22 goals thus far — the fifth-best in the league. Without a good striker, Chelsea will struggle once again and the result could be something like 1-0 or 2-1 for Tottenham. It will be the continuation of Chelsea struggles, who have scored more than one goal just two times in the last seven games.
