With Week 16 carrying heavy implications for the NFL playoffs and your fantasy football playoffs, a big chunk of people were unfortunately subjected to having the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears on their TVs for the mid-afternoon game. With these two teams not fighting for anything this year, it was a tough game to watch, especially as the Seahawks let a late lead disappear, falling 25-24 at the last second.

Nick Foles was the starting QB for the Bears, with Justin Fields down with an injury, and he, combined with Russell Wilson, helped combine to make this game tough to watch, even though any football game played in the snow is a spectacle.

Seahawks Week 16 Takeaways

3. Penny deserves to be the starter in 2022

Entering the 2021 season, the Seahawks had Chris Carson as their starter, and rightfully so, as he was the best option on the roster. But former first-round pick Rashaad Penny, who has dealt with a ton of injuries so far, was waiting in the wings for his chance to take that role.

With Carson out for the year, it has rotated to Alex Collins, DeeJay Dallas, and Penny, with Penny being the best option of the three – his 17/135/1 line on the ground Sunday is a perfect example of how good Penny can be, even behind a putrid offensive line.

Carson’s two-year deal has an out after this season, which would save the Seahawks money, and with Penny still on his rookie deal, all signs point to Penny being given the keys for next season.

2. Defense surprisingly held its own

The defense for the Seahawks has been consistently bad this year, even when safety Jamaal Adams was healthy. Ranking near the middle of the pack against the rush, they are one of the worst in the league against the pass, but both areas actually held up against the Bears.

While Foles certainly is no top-20 QB anymore, he is comfortable in the Matt Nagy offense, so holding him to 250 passing yards and just over 7 yards per attempt should be seen as a victory for this team.

On the ground, they kept David Montgomery in check, as it took 21 carries to earn 45 yards and a TD, just over 2 yards per attempt. With the weather producing what was thought to be more of a run-first environment, Seattle has at least one thing to hang its hat on, even though this unit allowed Foles to drive 80 yards down the field to win the game.

1. Wilson deserves better – and to be elsewhere

This year has been a lost season for the Seahawks, and it has shown that Wilson deserves a better situation, one that ultimately should result in him being traded this offseason. Rumors were flying before this year began about potential destinations for him to be sent to, but nothing came of it, and he resumed playing for the struggling Seahawks.

Wilson’s skill set lends itself to be in more of a passing offense, not one like Seattle employs that focuses on the run and then the opportunities that come from it via play-action opportunities. With mentions of Chicago, the Giants, and others being in play for Wilson’s services, it would be the right thing for this team to do to send their long-time franchise QB out of town and get a king’s ransom in return for him.

The potential of Wilson ever being successful again for the Seahawks is very low, especially with how this front office has failed to put a solid team around him. Sunday’s loss did not expose anything specific in that matter, but it only backed up the idea that Wilson would be best-suited playing elsewhere on Sundays next season.
