The New York Mets have made some incredible moves this offseason. Their biggest one happened on Monday when they signed star pitcher Max Scherzer.

Scherzer has been one of the best pitchers in the past decade, there's an even an argument that he is going to be top 10 of all time when it's all said and done. What he does outside of pitching is extremely valuable to any teams clubhouse. He's going to bring in a bulldog mentality that the Mets desperately need.

The Mets also have signed Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar. There are still rumors that they are not done this offseason as they could look to add one of the premier shortstops that are still left on the market, or retain Javier Baez.

The Mets have already had a huge off-season and it doesn't look like the owner Steve Cohen is going to stop anytime soon. This was undoubtedly the best addition that any team is going to make this offseason. Let's take a look at a few reasons why the Mets made the right decision and why they possibly made the wrong decision, in signing Max Scherzer.

2 Reasons Why They Made The Right Decision

2. He's Max Scherzer

There's arguably nobody else in the MLB who a team would want to send out there to pitch. Max Scherzer has been a killer his entire life. No matter if he has his best stuff, or his worst stuff, he's going to compete and give you valuable innings. If any team in baseball had the money to sign Scherzer, they were going to offer the same amount of money that the Mets spent on him.

It also has to be factored in that the Mets already have arguably the best pitcher of all time in Jacob DeGrom. Having those two guys as your number one and number two starters in a rotation shouldn't be legal. This is going to be the best one-two punch that Major League Baseball has arguably ever seen.

1. They have the money to spend

Owner Steve Cohen has expressed multiple times that he's not afraid to spend money to help this Mets team become contenders. He has said some questionable things on Twitter that many fans, players, and media have not been happy about. Everything that Steve Cohen has ever put out on Twitter is now forgotten after he's made some of these moves this offseason.

If a team has the money to spend, then there is no reason why they shouldn't go out and get the best available guys on the market. The Mets did exactly that by signing Max Scherzer. There was no excuse for them not to go out and get him.

2 Reasons Why They Made The Wrong Decision

2. He's getting older

This could come back to haunt the Mets when he is in his third year of this deal. If Max Scherzer has shown any anything over the past few seasons, it's that he's not declining with age. He went to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season and finished with a sub 1.5 ERA, and went 7-0 on the hill.

Possibly in two seasons or so there could be some regrets of bringing Max Scherzer in, but that's only if the Mets do not win a World Series. If the Mets can bring a World Series back to the Queens, then it will not matter how Scherzer performs when he's in his last year of his contract because he already did everything that the fans could have asked him for.

If there's one guy in the MLB who doesn't look like he's declining in age, it's Max Scherzer.

1. Arm issues last season

During the playoffs, last season, Scherzer's elbow started to bother him. It would make sense that in the physical this was the first thing that the Mets looked for. We have to make the assumption that they made the right decision and saw nothing was wrong in his elbow. Scherzers' arm was probably bothering him because of over usage and having to come in and pitch on short days notice out of the bullpen.

If there is something wrong with his arm, obviously this would be a failed signing but as already noted, we have to assume that the Mets took full precaution to make sure that nothing was wrong with his arm.

The New York Mets are arguably going to be the best team in baseball with the current roster that they have put together. If they can possibly add some bullpen help and maybe some extra key bats to their lineup, the Mets should be walking away with a World Series next season.
