The San Francisco 49ers acquired New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in a trade on Monday night. It was one of the first huge moves made by general manager John Lynch.

If you ask him, Jimmy Garoppolo was certainly worth the investment.

“We are thrilled for Jimmy to join the 49ers family,” John Lynch said in a statement. “Jimmy is a player we have researched extensively since Kyle [Shanahan] and I joined the 49ers. I am extremely pleased this came together today and we all think it is a big win for our organization. Albeit in limited game action, Jimmy has displayed the characteristics and traits that we believe are vital to being a successful quarterback in this league. He has had the rare opportunity to sit and learn from a future Hall of Fame quarterback in a championship atmosphere. We look forward to Jimmy joining the team tomorrow and hitting the ground running.”

Who honestly knows how good he is? However, even if you want to believe he was a product of his system, Kyle Shanahan is known as a bit of a gunslinger whisperer. He did wonders with nearly every quarterback he has worked with (save for an exception, kind of, in Robert Griffin III).

Jimmy Garoppolo is not expected to start this week for the 49ers. But this move by John Lynch wasn't about the immediate future, but the long-term health of the franchise he is tasked with bringing back to competence — and even, maybe, beyond.
