The San Francisco 49ers will be without cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon for at least the next month due to a sprained foot suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made such news official to begin the week while Witherspoon departed his team's Week 3 win over the Steelers in the fourth quarter before undergoing a MRI earlier in the day on Monday.

Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area:

“I felt real bad for him because he’s been playing at a high level,” Shanahan recently told NBC Sports Bay Area. “He’s been covering very well. He was playing very physical, too. I thought yesterday was probably the most physical game I’ve seen him have. He was making tackles and he was throwing his body around.

“It’s unfortunate for him, but setbacks do happen. It’s a part of football. He’ll work to get back, and when he comes back, I expect him to be right where he was when he left off.”

It is worth noting, though, that Witherspoon's starting role will continue to be up for grabs in his absence. As it stands today, Shanahan has made it pretty clear that Emmanuel Moseley is currently in the lead over a veteran cornerback in Jason Verrett for such a role.

“It’ll be all about practice,” Shanahan said. “We have a number of guys who are candidates for it.”

The undefeated 49ers will now gear up to take on the 1-2 Cleveland Browns in Week 4. In addition to the Steelers, the 49ers have also defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals this season.
