San Francisco 49ers defensive end Dee Ford will likely miss the rest of the 2019 NFL regular season after re-aggravating a hamstring strain. According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner on Twitter, the 28-year-old one-time Pro-Bowler is out “at least” three weeks, with head coach Kyle Shanahan claiming Ford will be out “longer than last time.”

Ford has had a difficult go of it this season—his first with the 49ers after an accomplished career with the Kansas City Chiefs. Ford was traded to the Bay Area franchise in March of this year for a 2020 second-round pick. The former first-round pick-up of the Chiefs from the 2014 NFL Draft out of Auburn previously hurt his hamstring, which required being sidelined for San Francisco's Weeks 12 and 13.

Ford was supposed to return against the Saints on Sunday but remained limited in his return—and now out for even longer.

The Niners lost Ford on the same day veteran center Weston Richburg went down for the season, and respected cornerback Richard Sherman is expected to be sidelined for a while, too.

“It's tough,” Shanahan said, via Wagoner. “It was a huge win and we enjoyed that a ton obviously but some mixed feelings today with some of these injuries, which is tough, especially losing Richburg for the year. The other guys got some serious ones, too, hopefully we can keep playing well so we can give them a chance to come back and help us if we can make our season longer than three games.”

Ford has only recorded 14 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 11 games this season, far from the impact the 49ers had expected of the Pro-Bowler.
