San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett was helped off the field during Sunday's week 1 matchup with the Detroit Lions, and his head coach Kyle Shanahan fears that Verrett suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Verrett seemed extremely emotional as he headed to the locker room.
“It’s crushing,” Shanahan said to the media following his team's 41-33 win over Detroit. “Hoping for the best, but it’s crushing.”
Verrett is no stranger to injuries, as the 30-year-old tore his ACL and achilles back when he played for the Chargers.
Verrett's injury opens up an opportunity for cornerback and former Pro-Bowler Richard Sherman to step in.

The 49ers also lost running back Raheem Mostert to a knee injury, though it is unclear if his is as severe as Verrett's. Rookie Elijah Mitchell replaced Mostert, and was able to run the ball for a 38-yard touchdown. Mitchell went for 19 carries for 104 yards.
Despite the dissapointing loss of Verrett, San Francisco should be pleased with their win over the Lions given how good Jimmy Garoppolo looked in their season opener. The 49ers' hopeful quarterback of the future, Trey Lance, was also able to sub in for a stint and throw a touchdown pass in his first game as a pro.
