The San Francisco 49ers have placed running back Jerick McKinnon on the physically unable to perform list, according to Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle.

McKinnon, who missed all of last season due to a torn ACL, had a minor setback in his recovery. While it doesn't appear to be anything significant, it's obviously a bit worrisome given that McKinnon is coming off surgery.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Georgia Southern, was originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round (96th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He played in 11 games during his rookie year, rushing for 538 yards while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Then, the following year, McKinnon appeared in all 16 contests but actually saw his role diminished, as he totaled 271 yards and a couple of touchdowns on the ground.

McKinnon then saw much more action in 2016, participating in 15 games and registering 539 yards and a pair of scores as a rusher, but he was not exactly efficient, posting just 3.4 yards per attempt. In addition, he hauled in 43 receptions for 255 yards and two touchdowns.

He then played in every game in 2017, finishing with 570 yards and three scores while averaging a pedestrian 3.8 yards per carry. He also caught 51 passes for 421 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

McKinnon then proceeded to sign a four-year, $30 million contract with the 49ers in March 2018.

He will be a part of a backfield that also includes free-agent signing Tevin Coleman and third-year back Matt Breida.

San Francisco won just four games this past year.
