A new era of football is underway for the San Francisco 49ers with the storied NFL franchise officially making a change at the quarterback position.

After weeks of waiting and getting to know Kyle Shanahan's playbook, the 49ers have named newcomer Jimmy Garoppolo the team's starting quarterback moving forward. The 49ers took to Twitter with the announcement that Garoppolo would start against the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

Garoppolo saw his first action in a 49ers uniform in Week 12 against the division rival Seattle Seahawks. The game was already out of reach once Garoppolo got the call, but he made an impact in his short time on the field.

The 26-year-old gunslinger threw and completed the only two passes he attempted on Sunday. One of those passes was an impressive touchdown toss to Louis Murphy in which Garoppolo had to scramble in order to make the play on the move.

The San Francisco brass made it clear they were going to wait until the right time to put Garoppolo under center, and it seems as though they believe having him face the Bears is an excellent time to do so. Chicago, another team trying to get a young quarterback up to speed, is also struggling this season and might be a good opportunity for Garoppolo to show the San Francisco franchise what it has been missing at the quarterback position.

San Francisco will have only four games left in their season after taking on the Bears in Week 13. Garoppolo, pending any injury or drastic changes, will square off against the Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Rams to wrap up his first season in the Bay Area.
