There are some people around the NFL who believe Jimmy Garoppolo has played his final game with the San Francisco 49ers and that general manager John Lynch will look to acquire a new quarterback in the offseason.

Garoppolo is currently on IR with his second high-ankle sprain and could be done for the season despite not requiring surgery. The former New England Patriots gunslinger didn't play well in 2020 when he was in the lineup, causing some to speculate that Lynch is looking to move on from Garoppolo.

During a Friday interview with KNBR, though, Lynch sounded like a guy who still has a lot of confidence in Garoppolo, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl last season.

“I think the elephant in the room: Everyone wants to know about Jimmy,” 49ers GM John Lynch said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “Here's what I know about Jimmy Garoppolo, and I think I've been consistent: We're a better football team when he's out there. We win a lot of games when he's out there. We've struggled to win without him.

“So people can try to pick his game apart. And I do believe this year Jimmy hasn't played up to his standard. I think a lot of that is he's been somewhat compromised by his health … We have a lot of belief in Jimmy.”

In six games this season, Garoppolo threw for 1,096 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he was picked off five times and the 49ers only went 3-3 with Jimmy G under center.

It appears the 49ers are going to miss the playoffs this season since they are in last place in the NFC West standings and both Garoppolo and tight end George Kittle will likely miss the rest of the campaign due to injury.

Once the offseason arrives, it's going to be very interesting to see what Lynch does with his quarterback position.
