The San Francisco 49ers, over the last several years, have had a history of making some solid selections in the first round with high-impact players to the mix.

However, it appears that one of their former first-round picks in guard Joshua Garnett could be on the fringes of the roster due to his struggles in his first two years. During a Q&A session, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee has indicated that Garnett may be battling for a roster spot this offseason.

The most prominent player in danger of being cut? Guard Joshua Garnett. He's going to have to hold off two players the 49ers acquired as free agents, Mike Person and Jonathan Cooper. Person currently is the team's backup center, which seems to dramatically improve his roster chances.

The 49ers had hoped that Garnett could become a cornerstone piece on the offensive line at right tackle, but he hasn't been able to make the necessary strides forward that showcase that potential.

Instead, he has found himself moving down the depth chart to the point where he could be cut ahead of his third year in the league. Garnett is in a situation means training camp could be a big determining factor for his tenure in San Francisco.

The Stanford product is set to enter the third year of his four-year, $9.3 million rookie deal that roughly has $5.5 million left over the final two years of the contract. This isn't a significant enough financial hit for the 49ers to wince at if they were to decide to move on from him.

Garnett now has the pressure on him to prove that he can be a viable offensive lineman who can begin to fulfill his potential as being one of the dependable starters. Simply put, it's on his shoulders to prove his worth to the 49ers.
