Kyle Shanahan is satisfied with Trey Lance's performance in his first start despite the San Francisco 49ers' loss in Week 5, but he clarified that Jimmy Garoppolo is still their starting quarterback.

The 49ers lost 17-10 to the Arizona Cardinals, with Lance limited in his activity as he finished 15-of-29 on his pass completion for 192 yards and no touchdown. The 49ers rookie also threw an interception once in San Francisco's third straight loss.

However, Shanahan has nothing but praise for Lance, adding that they could have won had the rest of the 49ers provided the youngster with more support.

“I thought we could have done better around him. I think he did good enough to win,” Shanahan said of Lance, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

While he is quite happy with what Trey Lance showed, though, Kyle Shanahan emphasized that nothing has changed when it comes to their starting QB. When Jimmy Garoppolo returns from his calf injury, he will take the reins of the offense from Lance once again.

Garoppolo is expected to return in Week 7 after the 49ers' bye week, which means the showdown against the Cardinals could be the only match he misses.

While some would have liked to see more reps for Lance as starting QB, the 49ers have already made it clear that the starting job is Garoppolo's. Moreover, as Shanahan shared previously, the plan for Lance all along is to give him more time to get used to the high level of NFL play and let him back up Garoppolo until he's fully ready.
