The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly opted to bow out of the sweepstakes for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. It appears there has been a sense of mutual interest from his side.

Phill Simms said on PFT Live that the 49ers had actually been his top choice in free agency:

“It was Tom Brady’s No. 1 choice . . . to go to San Francisco and be the starting quarterback,” Simms says, adding that the 49ers eventually declined to pursue Brady.

The prospect of Brady joining the 49ers certainly drew its fair share of headlines. Although it always seemed far-fetched, his connection to the team as a Bay Area native and their status as a bonafide playoff contender made it plausible. Regardless, it seems one side is content with keeping things as they are.

After all, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had entered the NFL as a potential successor to Brady in New England. Rumors had now suggested that they were going to switch places in San Francisco following Garoppolo's underwhelming showing in the Super Bowl. The reports had gotten to the point where even tight end George Kittle took to social media to come to bat for his quarterback. It seems he can take solace in the fact that it will stay that way.

As a result, Brady's list has now been narrowed down to two teams in the Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Meanwhile, Garoppolo got his first taste at having to deal with trade rumors that were directly attributed to his shortcomings.
