After long being rumored to become the newest member of the conference, Army football was voted into the American Athletic Conference as a football-only school on Wednesday, according to Pete Thamel. The AAC is shooting for the Black Knights to join in 2024, the same year current member SMU is leaving for the ACC.

Outside of a seven-year stretch in Conference USA, Army football has been independent and has no affiliation with a conference. Its joining of the AAC brings into question some of its traditional matchups.

The ever-so-popular Army-Navy game will continue to be played in December following conference championship week, according to ESPN. Navy football joined the AAC in 2015. Similar to Army, football is the only sport in which Navy is a part of a conference.

Despite being in the same conference, the Army-Navy game will be considered a nonconference game on the schedule. In the event that the two teams meet in the AAC championship game, that would be played in addition to the annual game and would happen in consecutive weeks.

Army football's annual game against Air Force will also remain.

Keeping these traditions and the annual contests between the armed forces academies going was critical in making this conference move possible for Army. The AAC had other schools in mind, but Army was always at the forefront and finally emerged as the perfect candidate to add as a football member.

The AAC will remain at 14 teams for football with the Army-SMU swap set to take place next summer.
