How the Chiefs got to the AFC Championship Game
The Chiefs are coming off a 27-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round. In the regular season, the team tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for the best record in the NFL at 14-3. The team has won 11 out of its 12 games, combining both the regular season and playoffs. Their only loss in that stretch was against the Bengals in Week 13 on the road.
Kansas City ended up having seven Pro Bowlers and six All-Pro players. This includes tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones, who had 15.5 sacks in the regular season.
A big part of the team's success is thanks to Patrick Mahomes. He completed a career-high 67.1% of his pass attempts for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns, both the best marks in the league, against 12 interceptions. The quarterback also added 358 yards on the ground for four scores. Mahomes ended up setting an NFL record for most total yards in a season by a quarterback with 5,608.
Because of that, Mahomes is a finalist for both the MVP and the Offensive Player of the Year Awards.
However, against the Jaguars, Mahomes suffered an ankle injury that limited his time on the field in the first half. While he will likely play on Sunday, it is uncertain what his condition will be.
How the Bengals got to the AFC Championship Game
Most recently, Cincinnati had an upset 27-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills on the road in the Divisional Round. Combining both the regular season and playoffs, the Bengals have won their last 10 games. They finished 12-4 and clinched the AFC North for the second straight year.
Just like Kansas City, Cincinnati had some Pro Bowlers. Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase and defensive end Trey Hendrickson earned their second consecutive selection.
Also, Joe Burrow earned the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. The quarterback completed 68.3% of his passes for 4,475 yards and 35 touchdowns versus 12 picks. He also added 257 rushing yards for five scores.
For his performances, Burrow became a finalist for the MVP trophy, joining Mahomes in the top five in voting.
Considering what happened in 2022, the AFC Championship Game already has a lot of history between the Chiefs and Bengals. With two of the top quarterbacks in the league facing each other with a Super Bowl bid on the line, this matchup is must-see television once again.
