Albany State University volleyball star Mariam Creighton was killed in a shooting at the Elleven45 Lounge nightclub in Atlanta, Georgia. The 21-year-old Creighton and 20-year-old Nakyris M. Ridley died from the shooting while four other victims sustained injuries, according to the Fulton County Police. The Stockbridge, Georgia native transferred to Albany State after originally playing at Benedict College.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our student-athletes – Mariam Creighton,” read a post on Albany State’s athletics page on X. “The Golden Ram athletics community extends heartfelt condolences to Mari’s family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time.”

“We are heartbroken over the loss of Mari,” wrote Albany State’s Athletic Director Kristene Kelly. “What a beautiful soul. Our Albany State RAMily is devastated by this news. Our thoughts are with Mari’s loved ones.”

The nightclub also released a statement acknowledging the shooting that occurred Sunday morning.

“We at Elleven 45 are profoundly affected by the recent tragic events,” the statement said. “Our hearts go out to all those impacted, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the individuals and families who have suffered loss and injury. The safety and well-being of our patrons and staff have always been our paramount concern. To ensure a thorough investigation in cooperation with local law enforcement, we will be closing our doors today.”

Atlanta Police responded to gunshots at 2:35 a.m., according to Jesse Nussman of 11 Alive. Law enforcement believed the violence began from a “physical altercation,” which led to six individuals getting shot.

This particular club has a history of violence. Before an aggravated assault case in November 2023, a petition garnering more than 4,000 signatures circulated after a shooting in 2020. Today, the petition to shut down the Elleven45 Lounge sits at nearly 6,500 signatures. An additional 584 people signed recently, likely in response to the shooting.

The investigation is still ongoing.
