North Carolina and Appalachian State face again after last year's thriller. It is time to continue our College Football odds series with an Appalachian State-North Carolina prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Last week Appalachian State took care of business against Gardner-Webb. They Struggled early in the game, scoring for the first time last in the first quarter. Then, they fell in the second after a Jay Billingsley field goal gave Gardner-Webb the lead. The Mountaineers would strike back. Joey Aguilar hit Kaedin Robinson for a 32-yard touchdown and he would throw three more in the second half to give Appalachian State a 45-24 win.

Meanwhile, North Carolina and Drake Maye had a tougher opponent. They had to face the University of South Carolina. After a back-and-forth first half that ended 17-14 in favor of UNC, the Tar Heels controlled the second half. Omarion Hampton scored his second touchdown of the day to open the half. Then Drake Maye would throw his second touchdown on the game in the middle of the third quarter. The defense was solid as well. South Carolina scored just three points on a Mitch Jeter 26-yard field in the fourth quarter.

Why Appalachian State Will Cover The Spread

Appalachian State lost their starting quarterback in the first game of the season, which means Joey Aguilar will be taking over as the QB1. He had a great first game completing 11-13 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Aguilar did not throw a turnover-worthy pass, but he did make three big-time throws according to PFF. He was pushing the ball well downfield with an average depth of target at 14.4 yards and was being protected well. He dropped back 14 times and was pressured just five, getting the ball off four times and scrambling for yards the other.

Meanwhile, the run game was solid as well. Nate Noel went for 114 yards on 24 rushes in the game. He was tough to tackle as well. In the game, he caused 15 missed tackles and had 73 yards after contact. He also got some good run blocking as well. His average position of first contact was 1.5 yards passed the line of scrimmage. When he did not have the ball, Maquel Haywood did. He ran 11 times for 46 yards. He was not as elusive but did have a nice 4.2 yards per carry.

The defense had some stand-out performances as well. Kevin Abrams-Verwayne was great. In the game, he pressured the quarterback twice while making two tackles and two stops for an offensive failure. To top it off, he also forced a fumble. Overall, the pass rush was good, but has some work to do. They got 16 pressures on Gardner-Webb and hit the quarterback seven times, but failed to get a sack. Still, they were good in the defensive secondary. They had three pass breakups and two interceptions in the game.

Why North Carolina Will Cover The Spread

For UNC, it is all about Drake Maye. In the game against South Carolina, he went 24-32 for 269 yards and two scored. It could have been better, but he has to deal with three dropped passes. Still, he had some issues. Maye threw two interceptions in the game while throwing another turnover-worth pass. He was also pressured a fair amount. On 35 dropbacks, he was pressured 11 times. While he did not get sacked, he did have to scramble for yards three times. Left Tackle William Barnes was highly inefficient. He allowed the most pressure on the team and had a PFF pass-blocking grade of just 33.3

Despite some poor offensive line play, the Tar Heels still had a good game on the ground as well. British Brooks ran 15 times for 102 yards. He forced five missed tackles and had 3 runs over 15 yards. He also showed some power. Brooks had 53 yards after first contact, consistently moving the pile. Brooks was also targeted three times in the passing game, coming away with all three targets for 18 yards. In the receiving game, it was Kobe Paysour and tight end John Copenhaver who shined. Paysour caught seven of nine targets for 66 yards and a score. He did have a drop but had 39 yards after the catch. Copenhaver was reliable, catching all three targets thrown his way for 52 yards and a score.

One defense was all about getting pressure on the quarterback. UNC had 30 quarterbacks pressured on the game, with eight sacks. Amari Gainer was great. He pressured the quarterback six times and came away with two sacks. Meanwhile, Kaimon Rucker had eight quarterback pressures, a sack, and six stops for offensive failure. Overall, the four starting linebackers were tough to handle. Between Rucker, Gainer, Cedric Gray, and Power Echols, they had 18 stops for offensive failure. Still, Gray struggled some in the passing game. He was targeted six times and allowed five catches for 70 yards. The biggest issue was Tayon Holloway. On ten targets, eight came away for receptions. Those went for 134 yards in the game.

Final Appalachian State-North Carolina Prediction & Pick

The Tar Heels offense played well in the first game of the year. They were facing an SEC defense and did not have trouble moving the ball with a balanced attack. In this game, that should continue. They will move the ball with ease and continue to get first downs. UNC was also dominant in the run game. They held South Carolina to -2 yards on the ground. They will go after the backup quarterback who is making his first start hard. Expect them to get a lot of pressure and confuse Aguilar. If they can come away with a few turnovers, it will be too early. Do not expect the fireworks in the fourth quarter from last year, and lay the points with North Carolina.

Final Appalachian State-North Carolina Prediction & Pick: North Carolina -19.5 (-105)
