New Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze is ready to soak in the atmosphere of playing in the SEC. After four seasons at Liberty, Hugh Freeze makes his return to college football's top conference when the Auburn football team hosts Massachusetts in its 2023 season opener Saturday at Jordan Hare Stadium.
Freeze knows what it's like to coach SEC football. He was the Ole Miss football coach from 2012-2016, leading the Rebels to No. 3 in the AP Top 25 Poll at points during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. With Auburn football fans desperate to get back into the national championship conversation, Jordan Hare Stadium should be rocking when the Tigers take the field for the first time this year.
“It's gonna be a magical experience I know in that stadium (Jordan Hare). … I soak in every game pretty much… even at Liberty, we played in SEC arenas and those are always fun to play in and I embrace those opportunities,” Freeze said, via ESPN. “To me, I think the most exciting thing to me would just be taking in what I consider to be one of the best home atmospheres in college football and I don't know that I've had that — no offense to any other places that I've been.”
The Auburn football team has finished back-to-back seasons with a losing record for the first time since 1999. Freeze is looking to turn around a program that is six years removed from playing in its last SEC title game.
Auburn starts its 2023 SEC schedule on Sept. 23 against Texas A&M. The Tigers will play five ranked teams in a row, including a matchup with preseason No. 1 Georgia.
