The Chicago Bears have been struggling for quite some time now. There is hope that Justin Fields can be the franchise quarterback Chicago has never had. That same hope was prevalent with Mitchell Trubisky and Jay Cutler as well. However, new information has released the team nearly went in a different direction with Bruce Arians.
According to The Athletic, the Bears nearly hired Bruce Arians who was ecstatic with the idea of potentially coaching Jay Cutler. It didn't turn out that way, as Chicago ended up hiring Marc Trestman instead.
“Arians seemed like a slam-dunk hire, particularly given his work with quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck and the 11-5 record he posted as the interim head coach in Indianapolis the previous season,” per The Athletic.
As it turns out, Bruce Arians was extremely confident he'd land the head coaching job during that time and his father, Jake Arians, explains how his son was eager to be the Bears' next head coach.
“He thought he had it. He was excited about coaching Jay Cutler. With ‘no risk-it, no biscuit,’ he thought Jay could have had some monster years. He had camaraderie with Phil Emery. They saw things similarly, had the same philosophies,” Jake Arians via The Athletic.
For whatever reason, Phil Emery was enamored by Marc Trestman and chose to hire him instead. Hindsight makes everyone a genius, but it's insane to think how the Bears missed an opportunity to have Arians as their head coach.
Maybe it would have worked out, maybe Chicago would find themselves in the same situation as now. However, the idea of Jay Cutler in his prime playing in Bruce Arians' offense could have been electric in the NFL. Instead, the Bears have to live with their decision-making.
Hopefully, this time around the Bears can get it right and hire a competent head coach to lead the team. Justin Fields has all of the potential in the world, making this head coaching search extremely important for Chicago.
