The Chicago Bears grabbed their fifth straight win after edging past the Detroit Lions 23-16 on Thanksgiving, which only further strengthened their lead atop the NFC North standings.

This was accomplished with second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky out due to a shoulder injury, thrusting backup Chase Daniel into action. Following the game, Daniel voiced that he felt he performed quite well in place of Trubisky, according to Simon Kaufman of Bears.com.

“The job of a backup quarterback is to get the starter ready and to be prepared when your opportunity comes,” Daniel said. “And I felt like I did that pretty well.”

Daniel put forth a strong performance against the Lions, proving to be an asset with his arm by completing 27-of-37 passes for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns. With the running game struggling to the tune of 38 yards on 14 carries, he moved the ball down the field enough to orchestrate three scoring drives. That included converting both red zone trips into touchdowns while playing mistake-free football.

Meanwhile, the Bears' defense stepped up with a pick-6 from defensive back Eddie Jackson that helped push the tide further in his team's favor. Daniel simply did everything asked of him in the spot start, and Chicago has moved closer to a playoff spot.

The Bears will likely have Trubisky back in the mix next week as the decision to sit him for Thursday's action was more of a precautionary measure in order to avoid a setback after a short week of preparation. Given how Daniel performed, there isn't any rush for Trubisky to get back on the field as the team can rely on the play of their defense another week if necessary on the road against the New York Giants.
