Over the past year, there has been much discussion on whether Justin Fields can be the next formidable franchise quarterback for the Chicago Bears. For former Bears passer Jay Cutler, he believes that Fields has what it takes to meet the high expectations that have been placed on him.

Speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times, Cutler offered his stamp of approval to the former Ohio State standout.

“If the Bears start winning … I hope they do,” Cutler said. “And I hope Justin is successful, and I hope he’s the next big thing here and he’s the best quarterback to come out of Chicago Bears history.”

Fields is coming off of a roller-coaster rookie campaign last year as although there was much speculation that now-former Bears head coach Matt Nagy would opt to name him as the team’s starting quarterback for Week 1, Andy Dalton earned the nod instead. Fields ended up making his first start of the season in the Week 3 road loss against the Cleveland Browns, and he finished the year with 270 total pass attempts in 12 total games played.

Fields is set to feature in an offense guided by head coach Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. He already had an opportunity to work with the two during the Bears' OTAs.

Cutler, who played under six different offensive coordinators over his run in Chicago, sees that the team must formulate a bit of stability around Fields.

“I like him … he’s got all the tools, but it’s the same problem the Bears have had for a long time: They’re turning over coaches and turning over OCs,” Cutler said. “It’s hard for a quarterback. You look across the league, and the guys that are really good at quarterback have the same coaches and same systems each year.

“This is like learning a different language. It’s like if I told you: ‘Hey, you’ve gotta learn Spanish this year, and next year learn Italian and the next year learn Chinese,' it’s not gonna be easy.”

Fields will next get a chance to thorough his understanding of Getsy's offense during the team's training camp schedule later this month.
