The Cincinnati Bengals need some reinforcements this offseason following a 7-9 season which saw them miss the playoffs for the second straight year. Running back Joe Mixon realizes this fact and has decided to take matters into his own hands.

The incoming second-year back has taken to Twitter to try and convince top free-agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins to head over to Cincinnati to “squad up” with the Bengals.

Watkins responded to Mixon’s message by saying “you never know brother this business is crazy.” Mixon then countered by saying that “the city is waiting on you.”

Watkins had a slightly underwhelming season with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. He had 39 catches for 593 yards, although he did have eight touchdowns. The Rams recently opted to give their franchise tag to safety Lamarcus Joyner, which sent Watkins into free agency this offseason.

The Bengals could certainly use another playmaker of Watkins’ caliber alongside All-Pro receiver A.J. Green. Brandon LaFell wasn’t an outstanding second receiver; Tyler Boyd was a major disappointment in his second season; and rookie John Ross was a virtual nonfactor due to injuries.

Mixon, on the other hand, had a fairly decent rookie year for the Bengals. He had 913 yards from scrimmage and four rushing touchdowns as he stepped into the lead back role for the team. However, the team still needed a lot more production given the ineffectiveness of other receivers, as well as the absence of tight end Tyler Eifert.

The Bengals have other pressing needs on the team which they must address this offseason, particularly along their offensive line. But if they could somehow fend off what will likely be some stiff competition from other teams and find a way to get Watkins on board, that would be a big win for them.
