The Cincinnati Bengals made a surprising decision to stick with head coach Marvin Lewis for the 2018 NFL season. Lewis had been in perhaps the hottest seat in the league after a disappointing 7-9 campaign.

However, it seems the Bengals still have faith that the veteran coach is the right man for the job. Lewis acknowledged the team's recent struggles and was adamant about making improvements this offseason, according to Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“We have to make it better. We have to be a better football team. I mean, we have to,” Lewis said. “We’ve got a lot work ahead and players know that and understand that. They look forward to that. It’s that group of guys that’s going to lead them forward but they know what’s ahead.”

Marvin Lewis added that although adjustments will be made, he does not think the changes will be too drastic.

“It’s going to be new; it’s going to be different,” Lewis said, “so we’re going to have the [players’] attention, which is good. It’ll be a good spark for them to have. But we don’t have to reinvent the wheel. But we can certainly make it different, better.”

It has been a frustrating stretch for Bengals fans, to say the least. Cincinnati has seemingly been on the cusp of taking that next step in the playoffs for years now, but fact remains that the Bengals still have not won a postseason game since 1990.

That said, perhaps some drastic changes on both sides of the ball are needed. The Bengals ranked dead last in total offense this past season while their defense ranked in the middle of the pack. If Lewis plans on sticking around for much longer, Cincinnati will have to make some tremendous strides next year.
