Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross is expected to return to the field this week after suffering a chest injury that almost threated his life in Week 4.

Late in the Bengals' Week 4 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ross's sternoclavicular joint in his chest came about an inch away from puncturing an artery. Ross asked the medical staff if it was life-threatening and they confirmed it was.

“I asked him ‘could it be life-threatening?' And he said ‘definitely,'” Ross said via Ben Baby of ESPN. “He said it was a couple inches off or something like that from hitting the artery. I didn't want to know any more after that. I said ‘as long as you fix me, I'm fine.'”

Ross returned to practice on Nov. 13, taking a lot of reps with the scout team in an attempt to get back up to speed. Ross had gotten out to a fast start on the season and looked to finally be playing up to his ability before suffering the injury.

With only a couple weeks left of the season, it's unclear how much impact Ross will have on the offense as they try to ease him back into game action.

“It's hard to put things in perspective, because it's been so much time,” Ross said. “I definitely feel I can contribute, and I definitely will put my best foot forward to go out there and do everything I can to help us win.”

Bengals coach Zac Taylor made it clear that Ross would have a role, and he provides a deep threat for Andy Dalton that the team desperately needs.
