At long last, our favorite protector is here, and he’s arriving in Genshin Impact’s Version 2.2, alongside Hu Tao in her featured banner. Thoma is the resident fixer of Inazuma, and the benevolent chief retainer of the Kamisato Clan. Our Traveler first met him the moment we stepped foot at the docks of Ritou, and has helped us meet Kamisato Ayaka and a few other notable characters in Inazuma. Being a protector, Thoma specializes in providing consistent and durable shields, while adding a great amount of Pyro application in the mix. And looking at his abilities, he could very well be one of the best 4-star support characters in Genshin Impact.

Thoma is a 4-star polearm-wielding Pyro character, who has the ability to provide great shields for the active character, and can deal Pyro damage very frequently. Pyro is an incredibly strong element with numerous uses in gameplay, thus his Elemental Burst can be both a supporting and a damaging tool for many teams. The strength of his shields is also respectable given enough HP, and can always be relied upon for mitigating damage and certain mechanics. Thoma is as good as a must-pull, and you definitely won’t regret pulling for him after seeing what he can bring to the table.

Abilities Overview

Thoma’s Elemental Skill is Blazing Blessing. Using his spear, Thoma performs a fiery AoE attack that deals Pyro damage, and creates a Blazing Barrier. Blazing Barrier is Thoma’s shield mechanic that is also present in his Elemental Burst. This shield can stack with itself (up to a certain cap), and can resist Pyro DMG 250% more effectively.

Blazing Blessing is his bread and butter ability for providing shields, energy, and even damage. It’s a shame that there’s no “Sacrifical” version for Polearms, since it would be extremely strong with this skill’s high damage and long cooldown.

Crimson Ooyoroi is Thoma’s Elemental Burst. Thoma performs an AoE attack that deals Pyro damage, and activates Scorching Ooyoroi for 15 seconds. Whenever the active character does a Normal Attack, Scorching Ooyoroi will trigger a Fiery Collapse, dealing AoE Pyro damage to the front. A Blazing Barrier will also be summoned for every Fiery Collapse, albeit with lower stats(shielding) than its Elemental Skill counterpart.

This ability defines Thoma’s place in the meta, which makes him arguably one of the best Pyro-type enablers, along with Xianling and Bennett. Frequent Pyro application is highly sought-after by Melt and Vaporize teams, while his shielding is quite remarkable when both of his abilities are combined.

Best Weapon Choices for Thoma

Staff of Homa – Let’s not kid ourselves–Homa is one of the most broken weapons in the game, and Thoma benefits a lot more from HP, where the Homa is great at. More HP means better shields, and the weapon’s HP-to-ATK bonus and Crit DMG substat is absolutely phenomenal for his Sub-DPS performance. Another great 5-star alternative is the Skyward Spine, which provides a great base ATK and a much needed Energy Recharge stat, so Thoma can easily sustain his Elemental Burst.

The Catch – Probably the best F2P polearm so far, The Catch provides everything Thoma needs: Energy, Elemental Burst DMG, and Burst Crit Rate. Thoma can easily fill the Sub-DPS role using this very accessible weapon, while having a lot of Energy Recharge at his disposal. Other great 4-star alternatives are the Favonius Lance, Deathmatch, and Dragon’s Bane. Favonius Lance has great base ATK and massive Energy gain, Deathmatch has a lot of Crit Rate and a great passive, while Dragon’s Bane is amazing for a purely Vaporise comp.

Best Artifact Sets for Thoma

Noblesse Oblige (4-piece) – Also called the NO4, this artifact set is the premier choice for supportive characters who specialize in their Burst utility. Thoma is no exception, and this set will be a reliable mainstay for him in a lot of team compositions.

Emblem of Severed Fate (4-piece) – This is a great alternative, especially if one of Thoma’s party members already has the NO4 set, since it doesn’t stack. This set’s 4-piece passive will reward players who want to stack a lot of Energy Recharge on Thoma, notably on teams with low overall Energy yield.

Crimson Witch of Flames (4-piece) – If you’re planning to turn Thoma into a massive Sub-DPS beast like Xiangling, Crimson Witch is definitely the best set for this. Pyro DMG Bonus is not easy to find, which this set has, and it also provides a great Elemental Reaction multiplier, that is perfect for Melt and Vape compositions.

Best Team Compositions for Thoma

Triple-Pyro Childe Vape Childe has come a long way, from being a clunky main DPS, to one of the better speedrun characters in the meta. His insane Hydro application is unmatched, and what better way to abuse it than using THREE Pyro Characters constantly Vaporising each and every hit? This composition consists of Childe as the Vape enabler, Bennett to provide Energy and ATK boost, and finally, Xiangling and Thoma to deal massive Vaporise damage in every rotation.

Sub-DPS Thoma A.K.A. Pyro Xingqiu – Despite having different Elements, Thoma and Xingqiu have a lot of things in common. Both have some sort of damage mitigation, have strong elemental types, and have very powerful Bursts that are vital in many popular team comps. Thoma’s Elemental Burst is like that of his Hydro counterpart, which deals frequent off-field Elemental damage for a very long duration. Thoma has a lot of potential comps, like Melt Ganyu, (Inter)National Team, Overload Raiden, or even just a general Pyro Sub-DPS support.

Thoma is an all-around character with tons of utility and great potential for meta teams. You’ll definitely won’t regret pulling for Thoma, and you can even snag a Hu Tao, another overpowered Pyro character, if you’re feeling lucky.
