The Toronto Blue Jays have had two miserable months this season. The Jays are under .500 and look like a below-average team. It wasn't supposed to be this way, and frankly, it shouldn't be this way. The Jays have really good starting pitching, beginning with Jose Berrios, who has been pitching like a true staff ace this season. Kevin Gausman has regressed from 2023 but is still capable of dazzling, as was the case on Saturday in his complete-game shutout of the Oakland A's. Yusei Kikuchi has been very good this season. Chris Bassitt is still a solid starter; he went eight innings and gave up just one run to Oakland on Friday night. The Blue Jays should be several games above .500 with the caliber of starting pitching they are receiving. Yet, their offense and bullpen have been disastrously bad. Therefore, the Jays have a losing record and are looking up in the standings.
The Jays are still lucky to a degree in that the American League wild card race is jumbled. The third wild card spot — the sixth playoff berth in the American League — is entirely up for grabs. The Baltimore Orioles (the second-place team in the American League East) and the Kansas City Royals are firmly in control of the races for the top two wild card spots, but that third spot is a mystery, given that the Minnesota Twins have lost several games in a row to fall back to the pack. The Jays and other teams near the .500 mark can certainly catch Minnesota. The defending champion Texas Rangers are under .500. So are the Houston Astros. If the Blue Jays can finally start to hit consistently, they might still have a chance to make the playoffs.

Why The Blue Jays Could Cover the Spread
After Saturday's complete-game shutout from Kevin Gausman against the A's, the Blue Jays will have a fresh and rested bullpen for this game. That could really matter, especially in the late innings. The Jays' pitchers have shut down Oakland hitters this weekend, conceding just two runs in 18 innings. Toronto pitchers have a scouting report on Oakland hitters, and that scouting report is being used well.
Why The Athletics Could Cover the Spread
The A's lost on Saturday, but they beat the Blue Jays on Friday in a 2-1 game. Oakland has solid pitching, and the A's know that if a game is close in the eighth or ninth inning, they can call upon Mason Miller, the fireballing reliever, to close the door. Miller is one of the top two or three closers in the game right now. That's a big potential advantage if the A's are tied or leading in the final innings.
Final Blue Jays-Athletics Prediction & Pick
The Jays are simply not good. They should be better than this, but they aren't. You should pass on them and this game in general.
Final Blue Jays-Athletics Prediction & Pick: Blue Jays -1.5
