The Washington Mystics did not figure to have a good WNBA season in 2024. We knew going in that the Mystics were going to be significantly constrained by an overwhelming and undeniable reality: They would not have superstar Elena Delle Donne available to play for them. Delle Donne powered the Mystics to the 2019 WNBA championship and was that “aircraft carrier” type of player who can put a team on her shoulders. Health problems have been a constant concern for her, and she wanted to step back from competition this season to reassess her options. There's no question that Washington took a big hit when this happened.
That said, even the most pessimistic person probably didn't expect what has unfolded through the first two full weeks of the regular season. The Mystics are the WNBA's only winless team. They have had their chances and have come very close on several occasions, but they simply can't make the one or two defining plays that turn a close loss into a close win. They have lost multiple games by only one possession (three points or fewer) and have lost multiple additional games by a single-digit margin. They aren't getting crushed most of the time, but they haven't yet found a winning formula in a single game. They sit behind the 1-7 Indiana Fever at the very bottom of the WNBA standings. They have to find a way to break through and give themselves a positive experience before this season slides into even deeper misery.

Why The Dream Could Cover The Spread
The Dream might not be that great a team, but they're an attractive choice because the spread is very small at 2.5 points, and Atlanta is playing the worst team in the WNBA. It's really that simple.
Against Washington, the Dream face an opponent which hasn't yet won a game. The Mystics' inadequate performances speak for themselves. Washington certainly hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt from a betting standpoint. Why think the Mystics are about to turn it around when they haven't shown once that they can get a WNBA win in 2024?
Why The Mystics Could Cover The Spread
The Mystics are due. They are going to win a game at some point. They have been very competitive, a point worth keeping in mind. They have covered a number of spreads even though they haven't yet cashed a money line ticket this season. They have been consistent in losing games, but they have also been consistent in playing close games. Washington might lose this game by two points. It would cover the spread if that happened. Atlanta has not been convincing by any measure in the early part of the season. You know the Mystics are going to dig deep; they're sick and tired of losing every game they play, and you're going to see an inspired effort here versus Atlanta.
