For the second time in just over a week, the Minnesota Twins start a series with the Seattle Mariners. It is now time to continue our MLB odds series with a Twins-Mariners prediction, pick, and how-to watch.
The Twins come in off a sweep of the Chicago White Sox. The series started with a blowout, as the Twins won 9-4, but the last two games were tight. Both one-run wins, including a 12th-inning victory yesterday for the Twins. The Twins scored well in the series, putting out 17 runs in three games. The pitching was alright, giving up ten runs in the series, and coming away with three wins. The Twins have won four of their last five and are 53-48 on the season. They are three games up on the Guardians for the lead in the AL Central.
The Mariners took two of three from the Blue Jays over the weekend, and are still in the race for the playoffs. The Mariners are 50-49 on the season and sit eight games back in the AL West. They are also 4.5 games back of the Blue Jays for the last wild card spot. In the series with the Twins just a week ago, the Mariners took two of four games. Still, they may not be big players at the deadline, as they have a lot of teams between them and the Blue Jays. They won the first and last game of the series but fell by a combined score of 16-6 in the other two games.

Why The Mariners Could Cover The Spread
The Mariner's offense has not been as good as they hoped this year. They are 17th in runs scored this year, while sitting 27th in batting average, 23rd in on-base percentage, and 24th in slugging. Dylan Moore has been hitting better as of late. In his last four games, he has four hits in ten at-bats, with four RBIs, a home run, and a double. Still, he is hitting just .250 on the month, and just .135 on the year. He is hoping that his recent streak will be a sign of things to come.
Meanwhile, Eugenio Suarez has been driving in runs this month and all year. He has 58 RBIs on the year, which leads the team. He has 11 RBIs this month with the help of six home runs. Suarez also has three doubles this month. He is hitting just .238 this month though. Still, there is power in those hits. He has 15 hits on the month, with nine of them being for extra bases. Suarez has also scored ten times this month.
Mike Ford is also hot. Ford has hit .321 this month with 14 RBIS. He has five RBIs in his last four games with two home runs. He has five home runs overall this month, and five doubles leading to his major amount of RBIs. Still, he struggled with strikeouts in the last series with the Twins. He struck out seven times in the series, including a game in which he struck out four times in his four at-bats.
It will be Luis Castillo on the mound today for the Mariners. He is 6-7 on the year with a 3.04 ERA. This month has been fairly average for his season. In his win, he went seven innings giving up one unearned run. The next start was the worst of his month. He gave up three runs with two home runs in five innings and took the loss to the Tigers. Castillo has had an issue with home runs as of late as well. He has given up a home run in seven of the last eight games. In six of those games, he has given up two home runs.
Why The Twins Could Cover The Spread
For the Twins, it is all about pitching. They are third in the majors in team ERA while sitting first in WHIP, second in opponent batting average, and first in quality starts. Kenta Maeda is the starter for the Twins today. He is just 2-5 on the season with a 5.10 ERA but has been better since returning from the IL at the end of June. Since then, he has made five starts and gone 21.1 innings. In that time he has given up nine runs, eight earned. That gives him a 2.73 ERA in that time frame. The last time out it was against these Mariners in Seattle. He went 6.1 innings giving up two runs and a home run in a Twins victory.
On the offensive end of things, the Twins are 19th in runs scored, while sitting 23rd in batting average, 21st in on base percentage, and 14th in slugging. Edouard Julien has been on fire as of late. This month he is hitting .426 with a .500 on-base percentage. He has five home runs as well with seven RBIs. Julien has also scored 12 times this month while hitting three doubles. He was great in the series with the Mariners. Julien went 9-15 in the series and scored five times. He also hit two home runs and drove in two runs.
Will Castro went 5-13 in the series with two RBIs in the series with the Mariners. He is not hitting the best this month, but his hottest streak was against the Mariners. For the month he is hitting just .227 on the month with a triple and two doubles. He has scored four times this month as well. His biggest asset has been on the base path. Castro has stolen eight bases this month. While Castro has been hitting okay this month, Byron Buxton has not. He went 0-9 in the series with the Mariners while hitting just .148 this month. He has been striking out too much. Buxton has struck out 24 times this month.
Final Mariners-Twins Prediction & Pick
The pitching edge in this one goes to Maeda. He has been pitching great this month, and should continue to. He also just had a solid outing against the Mariners. The Twins do not have all of their offensive pieces going right now, but they have enough. That should make it so they get the win in this one.
Final Mariners-Twins Prediction & Pick: Twins +1.5 (-188)
