Why The Marlins Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Marlins sit 28th in the majors in runs scored this year while sitting 22nd in batting average, 29th in on-base percentage, and 29th in slugging. Bryan De La Cruz and Jazz Chsiholm Jr. have led the way this year. De La Cruz is hitting .258 on the year with a .315 on-base percentage. He has nine doubles and nine home runs, good for 25 RBIs. Further, he has scored 7 times this year. Chisholm is hitting .265 on the year with a .336 on-base percentage. He has eight home runs, 11 doubles, and two triples. This has led to 27 RBIs. Further, he has ten stolen bases and 27 runs scored this year.

Josh Bell also has been solid as of late. He is hitting .223 on the year with a .303 on-base percentage. He has eight doubles and six home runs, which has led to 27 RBIs. Further, he has 21 runs scored this year.

Marlins pitching is 27th in team ERA while sitting 28th in WHIP, and 23rd in opponent batting average. Braxton Garrett will be on the mound for the Marlins in this one. He is 1-0 on the year with a 5.30 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. Last time out, he went all nine innings, giving up just four hits in a win. Garrett has made just three starts this year. The Marlins have won all three games, but in the first two starts, he went 9.2 innings, giving up 11 runs.

Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Padres are eighth in the majors in runs scored, while sitting fourth in batting average, sixth in base percentage, and 13th in slugging. Jurickson Profar has been amazing for the Padres this year. He is hitting .319 on the year with a .418 on-base percentage. He has ten doubles and seven home runs, leading to 32 RBIs. Further, Profar has stolen three bases and scored 32 times. Leading the team in RBIs this year is Jake Cronenworth. Cronenworth is hitting .271 on the year with a .338 on-base percentage. He has 12 doubles and eight home runs, leading to 35 RBIs. Cronenworth has also scored 24 times this year.

Meanwhile, Fernando Tatis Jr. leads the team in runs scored this year. Tatis is hitting .244 on the year with a .328 on-base percentage. He has hit eight doubles and nine home runs, leading to 28 RBIs. Tatis has also stolen six bases and scored 35 times this year.  Manny Machado rounds out the top bats of the year for the Padres. He is hitting .235 on the year but with 11 doubles and five home runs. This has led to 28 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

The Padres are 14th in the majors in ERA this year, while sitting ninth in WHIP and 11th in opponent batting average. Yu Darvish is 4-2 on the year with a 3.04 ERA and a .99 WHIP. Last time out, Darvish gave up seven runs in 5.2 innings against the Yankees. This was after four straight games in which Darvish did not give up a run. That was 24 innings of scoreless baseball for Darvish before giving up seven runs last time out.

Final Marlins-Padres Prediction & Pick

The Marlin's offense has not been great this year. Further, Darvish has been solid on the season. While Braxton Garrett is coming off the best game of his season and Yu Darvish is coming off his worst, expect some regression to the mean for both. This means, Darvish should be solid, while Garrett will be average. Combined with the better offense from the Padres, they should get the win.
