The New York Liberty are struggling right now. They are one of the favorites to make the WNBA Finals, but they're not playing remotely close to a championship team at the moment. The Liberty got bumped off by the Chicago Sky at home last week, and then they got whacked in a decisive loss to the Minnesota Lynx this past Saturday. The Liberty produced a huge blowout win of the Indiana Fever early in the season, but other than that one game, they have not been dominant. They lost just eight games in the 2023 regular season (32-8), but they have already lost twice before the end of May. This team has a lot of work to do if it wants to come anywhere close to last year's standard. Winning 30 of 40 regular-season games won't be achieved unless something changes significantly and quickly. One thing that has to be noted about the loss to the Chicago Sky is that Chicago has lost two straight games and has not looked very good. That loss looks worse and worse, and it also suggests the Liberty are not the lock they might seem to be against the Mercury.
It's true that Phoenix did score just 47 points in a blowout loss the other night, but the Mercury ran into the Connecticut Sun, the team which has clearly been the best in the WNBA through two weeks. Connecticut is the only unbeaten team in the league and is playing strong defense. That result might say more about the Sun than the Mercury. New York simply doesn't have the luxury of feeling it can cruise to a win in this game.

Why The Mercury Could Cover The Spread
The New York Liberty, as noted above, are just not playing well right now. Beyond that, they have not covered the spread in a majority of their WNBA games this season. Yes, they lost at home to Chicago and then got clobbered on the road by Minnesota, but even in a number of home wins this season, they have failed to cover double-digit spreads against the Seattle Storm and Indiana Fever. This team just isn't maxing out right now, and the 14-point spread is conspicuously large. The Mercury had a horrible night in Connecticut. Chances are they will shoot the ball better here and cover.
Why The Liberty Could Cover The Spread
The Liberty are angry. They know they have played bad basketball. There is too much talent and too much veteran experience on this team for New York to continue to be mediocre. At some point, this team will come alive. Phoenix just played an atrocious game versus Connecticut and now has to come back and play another game as part of a back-to-back set. It doesn't line up well for Phoenix here.
