The Toronto Blue Jays take on the Seattle Mariners. Check out our MLB odds series for our Blue Jays Mariners prediction and pick.

The Blue Jays have not announced a starter six hours before the scheduled first pitch. Check the news wire for updates before game time in Seattle. Marco Gonzales gets the start for the Mariners.

The Blue Jays don't have an announced starter for this game because Kevin Gausman got hurt on July 2 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Rays. A comebacker off his ankle was enough to sideline him for this start. It is unknown when Gausman will make his next start, but it's probably not going to be too long. He and the Jays escaped bigger and more lasting damage. Gausman wore a high-top shoe with more protective reinforcement. Had he worn a normal low-cut shoe, his injury might have been severe and far-reaching.

One name to monitor for Toronto's pitching staff in this game is Casey Lawrence. He came on in emergency relief after Gausman suffered his injury last Saturday. He gave up a few solo home runs to the Rays but generally pitched well. He threw 87 pitches and changed speeds quite well. He might make an appearance in this game.

Marco Gonzales has a 3.29 ERA. He has been steady for Seattle this season and has slightly improved as the year has progressed. Gonzales posted a 3.86 ERA in the month of April and nudged that number down to 3.44 for May and 2.90 for June. He gave up two runs in six innings on July 1 versus the Oakland A's, which is a 3.00 ERA for that one game. Gonzales has given up more than three runs in only one start this season, on May 23 against the Athletics. Notably, he held the Blue Jays to one run in six innings on May 18 in Canada.

Why The Blue Jays Could Cover the Spread

The Blue Jays have a batting order which can bring the thunder at any time. George Springer, Bo Bichette, Vladdy Guerrero, Lourdes Gurriel, Teoscar Hernandez, Matt Chapman, and elite-hitting Alejandro Kirk (check out his numbers if you're not convinced he's an All-Star) can all swing the stick and leave the yard. When the Jays have had hitting slumps this season, they have managed to bust out of them. They have not hit well in any of their past six games. They're due for a breakout, and you want to be ready to ride that wave when it comes.

Why The Mariners Could Cover the Spread

After sweeping the Padres in a two-game series in San Diego, the Mariners are one game under .500. They're fully in the wild card hunt. They're playing as well as they did when they started the season 11-6. Julio Rodriguez is tearing it up. Marco Gonzales and the rest of the starting rotation has been very dependable of late. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have lost five of six. They're not hitting at all, especially with runners in scoring position. They don't have an announced starting pitcher due to the Gausman injury. On top of all this, the Jays historically struggle on Western road trips. A series in Seattle was one of Toronto's worst and most frustrating series of 2021. This is a great spot for Seattle, especially when you also realize the Jays didn't have an off day when flying from Toronto to Oakland, and they didn't have an off day when flying from Oakland to Seattle. They're going to be tired for this game.

Final Blue Jays-Mariners Prediction & Pick

The Jays could score eight runs here, and it wouldn't be surprising, but when weighing everything about this game, the rested Mariners (no game on Wednesday) have a great chance to not only cover, but win outright, against a Toronto team which hasn't had a day off in weeks.

Final Blue Jays-Mariners Prediction & Pick: Mariners +1.5
