Two squads on opposite sides of the country go head-to-head as the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies clash on the diamond for game two of the series on Tuesday evening. It is time to check out our  MLB odds series, where our Giants-Phillies prediction and pick will be revealed!

After dropping a pair and playing lackluster for the most part against a putrid Reds team, the Giants have responded nicely with back-to-back wins. At 26-21 and in third place in the NL West, San Francisco will look to cut into the Dodgers' division lead by sending out right-handed starter Jakob Junis, who has compiled a 2-1 record with a 2.76 ERA in seven starts total.

The Phillies on the other hand are in the midst of a four-game slide and will try to nip their losing ways in the butt before things get too out of hand. With yesterday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to the Giants all but concluded, Philadelphia will seek to bounce back with southpaw Ranger Suarez and his 4-3 record and 4.74 ERA.

Why The Giants Could Cover the Spread

Almost 50 contests into their 2022 season, the Giants currently trail the San Diego Padres for second place in the NL West by 3.5 games and the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers by 6.5 as the yearly calendar sits at one day removed from turning into the month of June. While the Giants aren't off to as good of a start as they were in their division-clinching 2021 campaign. this is still a squad that has the ability to make some noise with the amount of talent on the roster.

Not to mention, but a big reason that San Francisco could cover the spread in this evening's cross-coast National League matchup is that the Giants bats are starting to warm up. Credit none other than longtime MLB veteran and former Tampa Bay Ray Evan Longoria for the recent hot wave surge, as the third-baseman has belted five home runs in the past five games played. With Longoria leading the way offensively, the rest of the lineup has been able to punish the baseball when stepping inside the batter's box.

As a whole, San Francisco now possesses the third-most runs in baseball with 237 and do a stupendous job in reaching base with an on-base percentage of .328, which also ranks out in the top five of all major league teams at fourth.

Of course, San Francisco has been nowhere near perfect in their pursuit to find the same success they experienced a year ago, as their pitching numbers have slightly scuffled in comparison to recent years. With Junis scheduled to take the mound tonight, the 29-year-old from Illinois will look to improve upon the team's ERA at 4.36 and .262 batting average against, both numbers that sit among the bottom five of major league teams.

Why The Phillies Could Cover the Spread

Not only have the Phillies lost four consecutive matchups, but they are also losers of six out of their previous seven games. In order for them to make a turnaround and start adding to the win column by covering the spread, Philadelphia must have a short memory moving forward.

When looking at this Phillies' crew on paper, their hitting statistics suggest that they are very similar to the Giants in the fact that they know how to tattoo the baseball, but also have struggled in recording outs when they step onto the mound. This could be a direct correlation of why the struggles have been as real as they have been with a 21-28 record, as the Phillies have generated the ninth most runs in the league with 220 but have the tenth lowest ERA at 4.03. This stat alone has been a small example of why the Phillies have failed to live up to expectations up to this point.

With playoff aspirations heading into the season, the Phillies need to put things int0 high gear, as the franchise has yet to reach the postseason since 2011.

While Suarez definitely struggled in his last for the Giants against the Braves when he allowed five runs on six hits and walked four, the San Francisco lefty has certainly looked the part versus Philadelphia with a 1.17 ERA in four career appearances.

Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick

In one of the more hitter-friendly ballparks in the game in Citizens Bank Park, expect a surplus of runs to be scored when these two teams go to war on Tuesday. This matchup will come down to which squad has been playing better baseball as of late, which has hands down been the San Francisco Giants. Surprisingly, the Giants will come into this game as underdogs, which should only increase the value in picking them. Until the Phillies can climb their way out of this deep hole they have put themselves in, then there is no reason to put your faith in Philadelphia.

Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick: Giants +1.5 (-162)
