The Boston Red Sox take on the Los Angeles Angels. Check out our MLB odds series for our Red Sox Angels prediction and pick.
Garrett Whitlock gets the assignment for the Red Sox, while Reid Detmers goes to the mound for the Angels.
Garrett Whitlock has a 3.02 ERA. He started the year as a reliever but has been moved to the starting rotation, where he has done well. Whitlock had a rough outing on May 21 against the Mariners, allowing five runs in three innings. Other than that one poor performance, Whitlock has been strong in recent weeks. In the three starts other than that one stumble against Seattle, Whitlock has allowed just four earned runs in 17 innings. He, like the Red Sox as a team, has stepped up his game in recent weeks, helping Boston climb above .500 after a horrendous month of April and an 11-20 start to the season through the first 31 games. Whitlock provides confidence for Boston, a key part of a Red Sox Angels prediction based on the current MLB odds.
Reid Detmers struggled in his first two starts after his May 10 no-hitter against the Rays. In those two rough outings, Detmers allowed eight runs in 9 2/3 innings. He needed to get back on track, and in his most recent start on June 2 against the Yankees, he did just that, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He did allow five hits and three walks, but he pitched out of every jam he faced. That's something to take note of in a Red Sox Angels pick.

Why The Red Sox Could Cover the Spread
The Red Sox are playing great baseball once again. They hit a pothole against the Reds and Orioles a week ago but have come to the West Coast and have promptly revived themselves. They swept the A's over the weekend and then got a complete-game shutout from Michael Wacha in a 1-0 win over the Halos on Monday night. The Red Sox are now in position to get the sixth and final American League playoff spot, the new third wild card berth now that MLB has increased the size of the playoffs from 10 teams to 12, and from five teams per league to six.
The Angels are in a downward spiral, having lost 12 straight games. The last two losses are the most brutal ones in this 12-game stretch. They blew a 6-2 eighth-inning lead against the Phillies on Sunday before retaking the lead, 7-6, and then blowing that lead as well in a 9-7 defeat on a walk-off home run. The Angels then suffered Monday's 1-0 defeat, threatening in the first inning against Wacha and then doing nothing after that. They wasted a great performance from Noah Syndergaard. They are finding ways to lose which are spectacular. It's really hard to trust a team when this stuff happens on a regular basis.
Why The Angels Could Cover the Spread
After losing 12 straight games, the Angels have to win sometime. It's really that simple. One can't say the Angels are the better team. One can't say the Angels are getting meaningful production from their roster other than the occasional strong start from their staff. Reid Detmers did have an encouraging outing against the Yankees last week. Maybe he will be the catalyst for a streak-breaking victory.
Final Red Sox-Angels Prediction & Pick
This is a stay-away game because of the Angels' losing streak, which will end at some point. If you insist on betting, don't trust the Angels.
Final Red Sox-Angels Prediction & Pick: Red Sox -1.5
