The New York Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox. Check out our MLB odds series for our Yankees Red Sox prediction and pick.

Jordan Montgomery gets the start for the Yankees. Kutter Crawford starts for the Red Sox.

Jordan Montgomery has a 3.19 ERA. While Nestor Cortes has been a very pleasant surprise. While Luis Severino has brought the heat and Gerrit Cole has been decent yet not spectacular, Montgomery has very quietly put together a very good season. He has given the Yankees what they want. They can't ask a back-end rotation starter to be much better than this. Montgomery is a reflection of his ERA. He is solid and consistent. He doesn't dominate, but at the end of a start, the opposing team looks at the scoreboard and sees that it has just one run going into the sixth inning, or two runs going into the seventh. He isn't making banner headlines or rising to the top of the Cy Young debate, but Montgomery is a significant part of a great Yankee season which could exceed 115 wins before it is all said and done.

Kutter Crawford has pitched fewer than 26 innings this season. He was used as a reliever earlier in the year. He didn't pitch for the team from mid-May through mid-June. He was moved to a spot starter when he returned to thee team in mid-June. He made two starts within a week. He didn't pitch again for the next two weeks but was asked to provide long relief on July 4. He shut out the Rays in 5 1/3 innings of work. Notably, that's the last game the Red Sox have won.

As you look at the Red Sox' rotation, you have to realize that injuries are shredding this team's pitching staff. Michael Wacha, Nathan Eovaldi, Garrett Whitlock, and Chris Sale all face varying degrees of uncertainty in their attempts to return to the Red Sox. Eovaldi, Whitlock and Sale are all rehabbing in the minors. Wacha had a start scratched. Now Connor Seabold is hurt. He had to leave Friday's game against the Yankees in the third inning with an injury. The Red Sox have piece together nine innings, and they have to do it against the Yankees. That's a problem.

Why The Yankees Could Cover the Spread

Even with Aaron Judge sitting out on Thursday and Anthony Rizzo taking Friday off, the Yankees have pounded Boston pitching. The Red Sox' rotation is banged up, and the replacements aren't up to the task even with the Bronx Bombers resting their best players. That should tell you all you need to know before a game in which Kutter Crawford will try to tame the New York batting order. Boston is scrambling for pitchers and trying desperately to get 27 outs. It's not a situation the Red Sox can like.

Why The Red Sox Could Cover the Spread

After Kutter Crawford's shutout of the Rays in long relief on Monday, he gives Boston a chance to get a good pitching outing. The team badly needs it. Also, while the Yankees are steamrolling the American League, it remains that with New York needing to rest injured stars such as Judge and Rizzo, the team is bound to have an off day at the plate. Crawford could pounce on a unique opportunity.

Final Yankees-Red Sox Prediction & Pick

The Yankees are mashing. The Red Sox are badly undermanned in their starting rotation. It's that simple.

Final Yankees-Red Sox Prediction & Pick: Yankees -1.5
