Why The Bruins Can Cover the Spread/Win
The Bruins have one of the best offenses in hockey, and they'll be up against one of the league's premier defensive units. The three-headed monster of David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron is enough to give any team fits, and Carolina will have its hands full trying to contain the elite stars. Across 72 games this year, Pastrnak logged 77 points, scoring 40 goals and assisting 37. Marchand added 80 points in 70 games, including 32 goals, while the 36-year-old Bergeron had 65 points in 73 games.
Article Continues BelowBergeron has been to the Stanley Cup Playoffs 12 times in his NHL career and will be one of the most experienced players on the ice in this game. In 160 playoff games, Bergeron has 120 points and will look to add to his impressive resume with a strong showing in Game 1 on the road. His leadership will prove crucial for the Bruins as they look to unsettle the sturdy Carolina defense.
The Bruins were slowed down a bit throughout the season by injuries to all three of their stars, but with the trio now healthy, Boston will show what the team can do at full strength in a best-of-seven series.
Why The Hurricanes Can Cover the Spread/Win
No team in hockey surrendered fewer goals this season than the Carolina Hurricanes. Their 202 goals allowed was the fewest in the league, and only the New York Rangers came even remotely close to their mark. Defense is the identity of this Hurricanes team, and while the likes of Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov may end up in the headlines more than their defensive-minded teammates, it's clear that their ability to prevent teams from getting on the scoreboard is what has gotten them this far. With Tony DeAngelo, Jacob Slavin, Brett Pesce, and Brady Skjei locking up opposing offenses, Carolina has consistency and veteran leadership within their top two defensive lines, both of which will be important in the series against the Bruins.
Carolina isn't just a defensive team, however. Aho, Svechnikov, and Teuvo Teravainen are gifted offensive talents who can change the nature of the game in a heartbeat. Svechnikov is a physical force who will impact the game on both ends of the ice, registering loads of hits while also firing on net when the opportunity presents itself. He ended the year with 69 points including 30 goals, second on the team behind Aho's 81 points. The rise of Seth Jarvis will also be something to watch for in this one, as the 20-year-old rookie caught fire towards the end of the season with 21 points in his last 26 games.
On their home ice in 2021-22, the Canes went an impressive 29-8-4, and they'll look to get off to a strong start in the series with a win at the PNC Arena.
Final Bruins-Hurricanes Prediction & Pick
This matchup could truly go either way, and the odds represent that. While the Canes are slight favorites on their home ice, it's difficult to count out the prowess of the Bruins' Big 3. Both teams will be looking to get the edge in the first game of the series, and this game could very well end up needing more than the 60 minutes of regulation to decide its outcome.
The books have definitely taken the defensive nature of the teams into account, setting the goal total at just 5.5, making a bet on the under difficult to stomach. This game feels like something of a dice roll at this point, but we're going to go with the home team and bet on the Hurricanes Moneyline at -118.
Final Bruins-Hurricanes Pick: Hurricanes ML (-118)
