The Tampa Bay Lightning will head just about as far away from their home rink as possible as they take on the Vancouver Canucks in Canada tonight. This will be the fifth stop on the road for the Lightning in this six-game road trip where they're also entering this game on an extremely rare three-game losing streak. The Canucks are playing the third game of their own seven-game homestand and going 6-1-1 in their last eight matchups. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Lightning-Canucks prediction and pick.

Why The Lightning Can Cover The Spread/Win

Article Continues Below

The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming off of a 4-1 loss to Edmonton last night, extending their losing streak to three games for just the third time this season. They'll look to bounce back here tonight to stop the streak from going to four games for the first time this season. The Lightning are averaging 3.42 goals per game (seventh-best in the league) and allowing 2.84 goals per game (11th best in the league).

Backup goaltender Brian Elliot got the start yesterday, so we can expect to see Vezina trophy winner Andrei Vasilevskiy between the pipes for the Lightning tonight. He's highly considered the best goaltender in the league as far as skill goes, as he's averaging a .912 save percentage and allowing 2.43 goals per game. He'll look to put on his best effort against a red-hot Canucks team.

Why The Canucks Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Vancouver Canucks have been red-hot lately as they're desperately trying to move up the rankings and make a playoff spot. Just three points behind the Knights for a wild-card spot, the Canucks will more than likely be looking to buy at the trade deadline, which is in just eight days. The Canucks score 2.86 goals per game (21st in the league) and allow 2.86 goals per game (14th in the league), which brings the averages to a dead even wash.

Starting goaltender Thatcher Demko will look to get another start tonight as he has been on fire lately, but posting a .916 save percentage on the year while allowing 2.67 goals against per game. He'll look to stay hot against a very dangerous Lightning team tonight.

Final Lightning-Canucks Prediction & Pick

This is one of those games where I am torn on the outcome. On one hand, you have the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions in the Lightning who are looking to three-peat again this year but are also on a three-game losing streak. On the other hand, you have an extremely hot Canucks team who is firing on all cylinders lately as they continue to climb to standings into a backdoor playoff spot. In the end, I have to go with the overall better team in the Lightning. They have the upper hand in every category, and there's no way they would allow themselves to lose a fourth game in a row. Give me the Lightning Moneyline tonight. I don't love the pick, but I think this is their “get right” game.
