Why The Rangers Can Cover The Spread/Win
The New York Rangers enter this matchup on a two-game win streak, solely based on the Vezina Trophy-worthy play from goaltender Igor Shesterkin all year. However, this would be a perfect matchup for the Rangers to allow him to get some rest. The starting goaltenders aren't official yet, but Shesterkin has started 10 of the Rangers' last 11 games and the Rangers have three tough matchups this week that will require him to be well-rested. With that said, the goaltender that would get the start would fall to Alexandar Georgiev, who has had his share of difficulties this season, sporting a .897 save percentage and allowing 3.05 goals against per game. He'll look to improve on his play tonight as the Jets have a strong team on paper and will strike early and often.
Why The Jets Can Cover The Spread/Win
The Winnipeg Jets head into this contest after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Stars on Friday; yet another high-scoring affair for the Jets as six or more total goals have been scored in nine of their last 12 games. The Jets' defense has really been holding them back as they are relying very heavily on their offense as of late. Both sides of the puck are pretty middle of the pack this season for the Jets as they look to get a good matchup in net tonight and score some goals. Winnipeg's offense has been more impressive at home this season where they at least have a winning record at 14-12.
It's unofficial on who will start between the pipes for the Jets tonight, but I can only assume it would be one of the best goaltenders in the league, talent-wise, in Connor Hellebuyck. Statistically, he's having a rough year with a .911 save percentage and allowing 2.92 goals against per game. He'll look to help the Jets come away with a small victory tonight.
Final Rangers-Jets Prediction & Pick
I'm making a pick on this game purely based on Georgiev getting the start in net tonight for the Rangers over Shesterkin. If Shesterkin plays tonight, I'd be looking at Rangers Moneyline, however, until the starting goaltenders are official, I'm going to lean towards taking the over 5.5 total goals tonight. It should be high-scoring, especially without Shesterkin in the net, so I feel pretty good about the Rangers and the over in this one either way.
